Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Emergency First Aid at Work course.

The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is a 1-day (6 guided learning hours) qualification designed for lower-risk workplaces, covering essential life-saving skills and emergency first aid procedures. The First Aid at Work (FAW) course is a 3-day (18 guided learning hours) qualification that provides more comprehensive coverage of workplace first aid, including a wider range of injuries and medical conditions. Both are Ofqual regulated qualifications.
Whether EFAW is sufficient depends on your workplace risk assessment. Lower-risk environments such as offices and shops may only require EFAW-trained first aiders. Higher-risk workplaces, larger organisations, or those with specific hazards may need staff to hold the full 3-day First Aid at Work qualification. Your risk assessment should determine the level of first aid provision required.
The EFAW course is assessed through a 15-question multiple choice theory paper (minimum score of 11 required to pass) and 4 practical assessments. Both components must be passed to achieve the qualification.
Yes, you can take the full 3-day First Aid at Work (FAW) course at any time. The EFAW qualification provides a solid foundation in emergency first aid and can be a useful stepping stone towards the more comprehensive FAW qualification.
